Numbers- The Number Line

The number line is a tool that is used to help students with adding and subtracting.  Students will understand that by adding numbers you will get a greater sum.  By subtracting numbers you will get a smaller sum.  It also makes it easier for students to see that by adding or subtracting a number by 0 they will get the same sum.  This is described in the grade 2 curriculum for math under outcome N2.2.

Numbers- Estimation Investigation

This video will help students learn how to estimate objects that are used around the home.  It asks the students to break things down in the jar.  If students could draw what 10 objects look like, it will be a lot easier to tell how many are in the jar.  In the grade 2 math curriculum teachers are required to teach estimation using a referent.  In this case 10 objects would be the referent.  This is described in outcome N2.1

Numbers- Playing Card Mats

This activity will help students with addition.  All you need is a deck of cards, and these mats.  These mats could easily be made on the computer and then laminating them.  By using the cards, students are able to count all the shapes to get the sum. This could also be a great tool for teaching students that if you switch the cards around, it still equals the same sum.  Addition with 1-2 numbers is in the Saskatchewan Curriculum Guide for grade 2 math, outcome N2.2.
