Statistics and Probability- Bugs a Bugging Graph

This is a worksheet picture graph that allows students to create their own graph with the data provided.  Students are asked questions about the data.  They also need to make comparisons by determining what there is more of between the insects.  This would be a helpful tool because students in grade 2 need to understand what a pictograph is.  They need to be able to create and analyze the attributes, according to the curriculum guide for grade 2 math outcome SP2.1.

Shape and Space- Measure It

This is an activity for students to practice measurements using non-standard units.  It's a fun way to get students up and out of there desk searching in the classroom or hallway for objects to measure.  Some measurement tools could be unifix cubes, paper clips, or you could even have the students make paper links.  These are all non-standard units.  Students could choose a desk, locker, table, etc...  Once the students have chosen an object they will make an estimation and then measure away.  This activity helps students understand what non-standard units are.  It also helps the students to make estimations on measurements.  Teachers are required to teach students all of these things in grade 2 math according to the curriculum, outcome SS2.1.

Shape and Space- Fling the teacher game

http://firstschoolyears.com/numeracy/shape/interactive/shapes.htm

The link above is a game called Fling the Teacher.  It's a game that is engaging to students because if they do well, they get to fling their teacher in the air.  The game asks questions about 2D and 3D shapes.  This game kind of serves as a test on how well they know their shapes.  The students need to know the attributes of each shape.  In the curriculum guide for grade 2 math outcomes SS2.3,4,5, students need to know these objects and be able to tell them apart from their attributes.  They need to know the difference between 2D and 3D shapes.  This game could be a fun way to help the students learn this.

Patterns and Relations- How does my pattern grow

http://teams.lacoe.edu/documentation/classrooms/linda/algebra/activities/pattern_grow/pattern_farm.html

How does my pattern grow is an interactive game which helps students to learn and practice increasing patterns.  If the student is successful they will be able to create a repeating pattern, extend it, and describe why it grows.  This is something students are required to do in grade 2, referring to the curriculum outcome P2.1 and 2.

Patterns and Relations- Worksheets

http://www.nsa.gov/academia/_files/collected_learning/elementary/patterns/patterns_patterns_every.pdf

In the link above, there are several worksheets that will help students understand patterns.  They cover repeating patterns, increasing patterns and the core in patterns.  These worksheets ask students to draw pictures of patterns and make them describe what a pattern is.  In the grade 2 curriculum guide these are all things that need to be taught, as well as extending patterns and comparing them.

Numbers- Place Value

The place value math song is a catchy tool that can help students remember where numbers are placed and what category they belong in.  This gives them a visual understanding.  Place value is something that students need to learn while doing addition.  In the curriculum guide for grade 2 math, teachers are required to help students understand place value.

Numbers- Touch Math

Touch Math is a great tool to help students with their math.  There are so many different activities to do with touch math.  You can use it for counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and skip counting.  It is a very hands-on and engaging method.  Touch math uses the number as the manipulative.  All of these things are in the curriculum guide for math, such as kindergarten, grade 1,2, and 3.

Numbers- The Number Line

The number line is a tool that is used to help students with adding and subtracting.  Students will understand that by adding numbers you will get a greater sum.  By subtracting numbers you will get a smaller sum.  It also makes it easier for students to see that by adding or subtracting a number by 0 they will get the same sum.  This is described in the grade 2 curriculum for math under outcome N2.2.

Numbers- Estimation Investigation

This video will help students learn how to estimate objects that are used around the home.  It asks the students to break things down in the jar.  If students could draw what 10 objects look like, it will be a lot easier to tell how many are in the jar.  In the grade 2 math curriculum teachers are required to teach estimation using a referent.  In this case 10 objects would be the referent.  This is described in outcome N2.1

Numbers- Playing Card Mats

This activity will help students with addition.  All you need is a deck of cards, and these mats.  These mats could easily be made on the computer and then laminating them.  By using the cards, students are able to count all the shapes to get the sum. This could also be a great tool for teaching students that if you switch the cards around, it still equals the same sum.  Addition with 1-2 numbers is in the Saskatchewan Curriculum Guide for grade 2 math, outcome N2.2.
